Bart van den Berg is an international security, defense, and intelligence expert with an extensive career spanning military command, government crisis management, and strategic policy analysis. In his current role as the Programme Lead of the Clingendael Security and Defence Programme, his research focuses on international security dynamics, military capabilities, emerging defense technologies, and cybersecurity.

Before rejoining Clingendael in 2025, van den Berg served as a lead intelligence analyst and crisis manager at the Dutch National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). From 2019 to 2022, he worked at the Clingendael Academy designing international security training curriculums and directing capacity-building initiatives for senior military officers, diplomats, and civil servants globally.

A former military officer, van den Berg spent six years in the Royal Netherlands Army as an infantry commander leading operations in high-stress environments. His service includes a 2018 deployment to Lithuania with an international mechanized battlegroup under NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence. He holds a master’s degree in economics and business from the Rotterdam School of Management and Leiden University.
