Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics:

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. While orthodontics deals with straightening teeth, dentofacial orthopedics focuses on guiding facial growth and jaw development, especially in children.
Common Orthodontic Treatments
Braces – Traditional metal, ceramic, or lingual (hidden) braces.

Clear Aligners – Invisalign and other removable aligners.

Retainers – Maintain teeth position after treatment.

Space Maintainers – Preserve space for permanent teeth in children.
Common Dentofacial Orthopedic Treatments
Palatal Expanders – Widen the upper jaw for better alignment.

Headgear – Controls jaw growth and alignment.

Functional Appliances – Guide jaw growth to improve bite (e.g., Herbst appliance).

When to See an Orthodontist?
Children (7 years old) – The American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first orthodontic check-up by age 7.

Teens & Adults – Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age, but early intervention can prevent complications.
