Epilepsy and Seizure Management:
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterised by recurrent, unprovoked seizures, which are sudden bursts of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures can vary from brief lapses in attention to severe convulsions, depending on the part of the brain affected. The causes of epilepsy range from genetic mutations and brain injuries to infections, stroke, and developmental disorders. However, in many cases, the exact cause remains unknown.
Seizure management in epilepsy is crucial to improving quality of life and minimising the risk of injury. The first-line treatment involves anti-seizure medications (ASMs), which aim to reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures. These medications, such as levetiracetam, carbamazepine, and valproate, work by stabilising electrical activity in the brain. Treatment is often tailored to the type of epilepsy and the patient’s age, overall health, and response to medication.
